Each figure is 72 centimetres high. The hour hand is 2.97 meters long, and the minute hand is 3.28 meters. The clock itself weights 25 tons. Like Big Ben in London, the chimes of the Spasskaya Tower are broadcast over the radio to mark the hour. Russia's major clock is a timepiece, which is almost 600 years old. The clock was installed on the most remarkable of the Kremlin's towers, Spasskaya Tower in 1491. It was built under the supervision of the Italian architect Pietro Antonio Solario. In 1624, it was removed and donated to a provincial monastery, and the English watchmaker Christopher Galloway made a new one for the Kremlin. With the help of thirteen small bells, Galloway's clock was able to 'play music,' as the expression went.
