Tape description	Footage filmed during Moscow crisis in 1991. Since 1958 a larger-than-life Dzerzhinsky, cast in bronze by the sculptor E. Vuchetich dominated the downtown Moscow close to the headquarters of the Federal Security Service. Footage shows the rainy night of August 22, 1991. The monument was dismantled as a symbolic statement that the era of oppression was at an end. Crowds of people gather around monument praising new Russia, free of Communists. You will see people destroying the famous monument to Felix Dzerzhinski, the founder of Bolshevik secret police, the precursor to the KGB… "The Iron Felix," as Dzerzhinski was lovingly known in Soviet times, was not just a fanatical executioner, they say, but a top rate manager and a liberal economist. He also saved thousands of street urchins, giving them shelter, bread and education in the institutions run by his secret police. Now, some of those who presided over monument removal insist that it must be restored.
