The people of Maly Karely decided to restore the old Russian custom – the bell chime. Local sextons visited Moscow and other places, met with old sextons to understand the main principles and take over their technique. To ring the bells is a kind of art. One must have very good hand-foot coordination. They were happy when they heard the first ring of the bell in silence. It sounded extremely beautiful and captivating. At the North bells used to be the only musical instruments and they were taken very seriously – bells could be banished and their tongues could be torn out. People could be spoken to through the bells. The bell is ringing. People are standing by the belfry and listening to its sounds. During the Second World War in august 1941, Moscow ordered to take off and save the bells of Novgorod. Small bells were carried in the hands, the big ones – buried in soil. Now they are standing on a pedestal. The newsreel shows the Rostov-city bells ringing 20 years ago. People applaud the sexton. They ask the chief sexton to play the “Vesper chorus”. It was marvellous, sextons say. That sexton passed away long ago, the tune was not written down and sank down in oblivion. It appeared that not only the bells had to be saved, but the melodies also. In the mid 60-s a record was released called “Rostov Bells”. This record fascinated the visitors of Montreal exhibition. But it cannot replace the live voice of the bell.
