A documentary on two of the most unusual and rare species in the world, both born in sand: the raccoon dog and the soft shell turtle. Both species are found in the wooded areas of the Russian Far East and are native to south-eastern Siberia. The raccoon dog, also known as the tanuki, is a dog that for all intents and purposes looks exactly like a raccoon, including its markings and build. Raccoon dogs have no close living relatives in the dog family, though they show both behavioral and physical links to the bat-eared fox. Tanuki are as famous as foxes for their supposed supernatural powers for transformation and illusion, but whereas the tricks that foxes play on humans are often tinged with cruelty, tanuki tricks are more often described as being just good-natured tomfoolery.
The East Asian giant soft-shell turtle, after surviving for thousands of years in the lakes of the Russian Far East and Southeast Asia, may finally be faced with extinction. Freshwater turtles and tortoises across Asia have become increasingly endangered by a wide variety of threats, including hunting for consumption locally, regionally and internationally, as well as the pet trade.
