Footage picturing uprising of 1917 when the non-Bolshevik political groups attempted to oust the Bolsheviks from power. These events happened in Russia just after the Great October socialist revolution. Between 1918 and 1920 there was a civil war between the 'Red' Russians and the 'White' Russians. The 'Red' Russians were the Bolsheviks. The 'White' Russians were the Social Revolutionaries, the Czarist supporters: army officers and Cossacks, the Cadets and members of other 'bourgeois' political parties. In 1917 the opposition tried to open a sort of Russian parliament called “Uchreditelnoye sobraniye”, but its work lasted for a few days. The rebellion was finally stifled, the revolution won.
Filmed are monuments of architecture of St. Petersburg connected with the revolution and the defense of the city. Shown are Mikhailovsky palace and the Winter palace where Lenin worked, numerous photos of Lenin and other Soviet politicians of the time, such as Uritsky and Sverdlov. Archival chronicle used in the film shows revolutionists building barriers in the streets, getting weapons, firing. Also filmed are explosions in Petrograd streets, people suffering from hunger. Shown is defense of Petrograd, workers of the Putilov plant on an armoured train.
