Filmed in Champagne region of France, northeast of Paris, the documentary reveals the secrets of the world's favourite festive drink. The process of making a perfect pre-dinner cocktail involves lots of chemistry and many tedious physical manipulations. Champagne has no peer and nothing else deserves the name. In order to be accorded the appellation Champagne, the wines must be made from the Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier or Chardonnay grapes grown in the departments of the Marne, Aube, Aisne, Seine-et-Marne and Haute-Marne. Together with our camera crew you will learn about Méthode champenoise, the process of secondary fermentation in the bottle that produces sparkling wines from still wines. You will see every stage of this process taken place within the Champagne region. Follow us into a cool cellar where the bottles are placed and allowed to slowly ferment, producing alcohol and carbon dioxide. Each day the riddle comes through the cellar and turns 30,000 bottles 1/8th of a turn while keeping it upside down. Since the bottle is sealed, the carbon dioxide cannot escape producing the sparkle wine we call "Champagne".
