The footage is filmed near the city of Ukhta where a gas pipeline carrying natural gas from the arctic region exploded causing local fires on 27 April 1995. The site is 300 miles to the south of the Usinsk area, where a large oil spill happened the previous year. Filmed are views of the tundra, flames engulfing trees, sun hidden behind dark pall of smoke, oil bursting from a pipeline, billowing smoke, workers cleaning the polluted reservoirs, dump-body trucks carrying away polluted soil.
Recorded are interviews to ecologists from a Greenpeace team, they say that the oil spills in Russia's Komi region have caused irreparable damage to the fragile Arctic environment which can never be fully cleaned up. The oil spills in Usinsk and the gas explosion in Ukhta show the state of the country infrastructure. The clean up has caused further damage to the environment through the building of roads and new dams to contain the oil. Outside these containment areas, the clean up is even more primitive: filmed are workers breaking ice and scraping the oil into buckets to be loaded onto waiting trucks. The remaining oil is then either burnt or covered with sand.
