In 1986 the World's worst nuclear power accident occurred at Chernobyl. Nuclear power plant located 80 miles north of Kiev had 4 reactors and whilst testing reactor number 4 numerous safety procedures were disregarded. At 1:23am the chain reaction in the reactor became out of control creating explosions and a fireball, which blew off the reactor's heavy steel and concrete lid. The Chernobyl accident killed more than 30 people immediately, and as a result of the high radiation levels in the surrounding 20-mile radius, 135, 00 people had to be evacuated. The footage filmed from 1995-2003 shows close-ups of Chernobyl from different corners and angles. We posses rare footage of inside views of exploded Reactor 4. Panoramas and close up views of Sarcophagus which was constructed hastily and is currently not in good shape at all. Recent studies find the Sarcophagus covering Reactor No. 4 to be full of holes. A view of concrete tomb, metal constructions around the plant. Our camera crew followed an Environmental commission entering the power plant. We filmed all the special procedures, special uniform which must be taken on before the entrance. Views filmed in 1996 - 1999 when Reactors No. 1, 2 and 3 were functioning at Chernobyl. Unit 2 reactor was shut down five years later, after a serious turbine building fire; Unit 1 was closed in November 1996. The last operating Chernobyl reactor, Unit 3, was closed December 15 2003. Tape E29: Statement Mr. Victor Brukhanov, the former director of Chernobyl NPP: Became publicly famous in connection to ten accident after speaking at a Ukraine Green Party press conference in Kiev on 4 December 2000, he confirmed the unreliable design of RBMK reactors. This statement radically contradicts explanations which blamed the disaster on violations of operational safety on the part of plant personnel. “The time all the experiments/ trainings were finished instead of stopping the reaction there was an explosion. You can compare it to the car, you would like to stop the car but instead you spread it up”. Comments On the accident: “The key thing is the design of the reactor. The human factor of course played some role but not the major one. One had to find someone to blame. Here is a responsible person, look at him… I understood it quite good” “I regret that I can’t continue working in the atomic industry.”
