Chelyabinsk was one of the former Soviet Union's main military production centers, which included nuclear weapons manufacturing. Several “closed” towns in the region were strategically important. These cities did not appear on maps, and even today it is not easy to obtain environment or health information there. Filming is even more difficult.
The footage is filmed on the Mayak nuclear complex in Chelyabinsk-40 where a nuclear waste storage tank exploded in 1957. Day to day operation of the Mayak reactor contaminated a vast area of the region. This nuclear accident released twice the amount of curies that were released by the Chernobyl accident. Mayak is situated in the area around Lake Kyzyltash where the radioactive waste was dumped to. The lake eventually accumulated 120 million curies of the long-lived radionuclides.
Our camera crew filmed the lake’s surroundings and plant’s interiors; recorded interviews with engineers and plant’s former employees who speak on work conditions. Here locals are in need on social protection and medical aid. The contamination lead to dramatic increases in cancer rates, birth defects, and sterility.
