The coal-mining town is located in the north-eastern part of Komi Republic, about 50 kilometers north from the Arctic Circle. It is an endless desert of snow and ice. Views of the old center of Vorkuta covered with snow. Panorama of the city's main thoroughfare, Lenin Street. Views of the women all wear long wool coats in bright, basic colors of green, red, or blue with fur collars and their hair tucked up into fur hats. Men wear long sheepskin coats or thin nylon parkas. Views of the tall modern buildings topped with slogans extolling, "More coal for the Motherland!" and "Long Live The Friendship Of The Soviet Peoples!".
It is a unique town in the whole world. In the 1930s prisoners built city of Vorkuta and its first coal pits. The labor camps were dismantled in the late 1950 to be replaced by settlements around the mines. Now five of the thirteen mines that ring the city have closed down. After the collapse of Soviet Union and state support the mining industry of Vorkuta have had problems to be effective in market prices. Mines have operated at a loss while miners worked without pay.
