Views of Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan. From 1929, when the city became the capital of the Tadjhik Soviet Socialist Republic, to 1961, it was known as Stalinabad, after Joseph Stalin. The city was badly damaged as a result of a civil war that sprang up in Tajikistan shortly after its independence. Russian troops continue to be stationed in southern Tajikistan, in order to guard the border with Afghanistan. Since the September 11th Attacks, American troops have also been stationed in the country.
