Documentary is set in Staraya Russa (Old Russa), a small Russian town. Once here lived a famous Russia writer Fedor Dostoevsky. The film depicts a relatively happy period for the tormented author. His practical young wife, Anna Grigoryevna, took over his financial affairs, and they purchased a house in the quiet provincial town Staraya Russa, where much of "The Brothers Karamazov" was written. The writer was a wanderer; for a long time Dostoevsky did not have his own house. When he bought this very house in Staraya Russa he settled and enjoyed “ordinary person” life, firsts time in his entire life he felt understood. This house was surrounded by love; Dostoevsky could do everything here, even ridiculous things. Neighbors remembered that there was a light in the house during nights and probably the writer was up all the night. Dostoevsky was living here with his beloved wife, the best friend he ever had. The documentary encompasses family pictures, quotations from Dostoevsky’ letters and diary.
These were years of the Populist movement, successors to the revolutionaries of the 1840s, men with whom Dostoevsky had been allied before he was sent to Siberia and returned a mystical conservative.
